Roomba Or Infinuvo CleanMate Set Up For Optimal Performance

Filed under: Vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 1:17 am

Product documentation

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with your robot’s instruction manual. Make sure you understand how it works and what are its limitations. Yes, it might sound time consuming, but it could get worst if you don’t do things as instructed in the manual and affect the vacuum robot’s efficiency on the short and long term.

Find the best possible place in your home or office to settle your robot vacuum. Bare in mind that it needs room to breath.

Cramped places might make it difficult for your robot to come out and back to the docking station, which could affect the robot vacuum’s cleaning performance.
Avoid places where there are many obstacles and reflective surfaces like mirrors, which can interfere with the robots sensors.
Light sensors on your robot can be affected by dark and/or plush carpet floors. The robot might mistake the surface as a cliff and act erratically trying to back up.

Battery matters

Ensure your robot’s battery is fully charged before the first use. This may take up to 16 hours. Be patient! In some cases, your new friend may require a few cleaning and charging cycles to reach optimal cleaning capacity.

You are without a doubt anxious and excited about getting your new robot to do a first house or office clean, but not providing proper battery charge time may affect the performance and capacity of the vacuum. Yes, robot vacuum cleaners need training too!

Roomba virtual wall and lighthouse

Roomba owners benefit from two other devices, the virtual wall and lighthouse. Both units can keep your Roomba away from off-limit areas of your home using an infrared light beam. In addition to the virtual wall feature, lighthouses can also be switched to the lighthouse mode. Roomba and lighthouses communicate via RF (radio frequency) which improves your robots efficiency for multiple room cleaning. This is particularly true if you’re using the scheduling feature while away from your home or office. Refer to our robot vacuum cleaner comparison table or visit our Support Center to get more information on IRobot Roomba lighthouse setup and purchase.

Electrostatic Air Purifier - What Are the Benefits?

Filed under: Upright vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 3:05 pm

Your home, most likely, has particles like pollen, pet dander, viruses, and dirt and dust floating around in your air. Can you believe that you breathe these in all the time? You can suffer from very serious health problems because of these particles. You can suffer from anything from asthma to viruses and even allergies due to these particles. There is a way to reduce the particles in your air to almost nothing and live in a much cleaner and safer environment. You can use a Electrostatic Air Purifier to clean your air.

You might be thinking that you do not want an air purifier because you think you are going to have to listen to a loud and noisy machine running all the time. This is a very normal concern and if you enjoy peace and quiet, then you do not want to introduce a noisy machine into your home. However, Electrostatic Air Purifiers operate very quietly and still get the job done.

These air purifiers are also filter free. This means that with an Electrostatic Air Purifier you will never have to change a filter or spend your money on the filters. They use steel rods to capture the particles and filter them out of the air instead of the traditional filter that gets very messy and is not fun to change. You will have to clean your Electrostatic Air Purifier from time to time, but this is as easy as a quick rinse under water. Plus you will not be throwing anything away so it is better for the environment.

Some air purifiers leave a very strange smell in your air and do not leave it smelling natural. However, an Electrostatic Air Purifier will leave your air smelling pure and clean and there will be no strange smells stuck in your air.

If you are the type of person that believes that a clean home also has clean air, then you might want to consider an Electrostatic Air Purifier. You will experience cleaner and more breathable air. Plus it will help you sleep better at night without having to worry about snoring or getting sick as often.

Kirby Vacuum Cleaners - A Proud History Of Innovation

Filed under: Vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 4:51 am

Jim Kirby, the founder of the Kirby Company, was an inventor for most of his life. He worked to eliminate or reduce household drudgery with his inventions. He invented the first vacuum cleaner in 1907, a machine that used a vacuum to suck dirty air from carpets through a cloth bag that collected the dirt.

In 1925, Kirby teamed up with the Scott and Fetzer Company to produce the Vacuette Electric. This was the forerunner of all later multi-attachment vacuums, and featured a removable floor nozzle and handle. Most of Kirby’s subsequent vacuum cleaner models featured this convertibility, and it became a hallmark of Kirby vacuums that remains to this day.

The first vacuum to bear the Kirby name was produced in 1935, the Kirby Model C. It featured a toe-touch power switch and a belt-driven brush roll for improved cleaning. He continued to produce new improvements to his Kirby vacuum cleaners into the 1960s. Kirby Vacuums were also the first to use the in-home demonstration method of selling that became so popular with other home products. Kirby became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Scott and Fetzer Company in the 1960s and continued adding new innovations to its vacuums.

In 1970, the Kirby company used input from customers and distributors to produce a wholly new vacuum cleaner model. The Kirby Classic as an instant success, propelling Kirby vacuums to the forefront of the industry that Jim Kirby had invented years before, where they remain to this day. No matter if it’s old or new, you can’t go wrong with a Kirby.

Canister Vacuum, A Versatile Cleaning Tool

Filed under: Vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 6:38 pm

A canister vacuum is named so as a result of the vacuum motor being mounted on a drum or canister where the dirt and dust is collected. Canister vacuums have a hose attached to the canister which then is attached to a wand that has a cleaning tool attached to it. This cleaning tool may be powered to provide energy to the beater bar or rotating brush that is used to clean rugs or upholstery. In many ways the canister vacuum is ideal for cleaning just about any surface in your home or even in your car or truck. Normally the canister vacuum is pulled around the home or office by its hose to reach the areas to be cleaned. Wheels are normally attached to the canister vacuum to make this movement easy.

Canister vacuum models vary in terms of shape and size depending on their designed uses. Many are made of plastic or other light weight materials that allow them to be carried using a handle instead of being pulled across the floor. A major benefit of using a canister vacuum comes from the large assortment of tools that fit the vacuums wand. Removing the tool allows your to clean into corners and along baseboards. The small size of the power head tool allows you to vacuum carpets under beds and furniture that normally cannot be accessed using an upright vacuum cleaner. You can even remove the wand altogether and just use the hose to get under the seats of your car. The bottom line is that the canister vacuum is very versatile when comes to cleaning.

The canister vacuum does a good job of removing dirt, dust, allergens and pathogens with its HEPA filter. Sweeping are deposited in the canister in either a bag or are capture in the canister itself for easy removal. Suction power is generally higher on canister vacuums due to there design. Higher power canister vacuums can literally suck up and hold a bowling ball off the floor. This high rate of suction removes more dirt than ordinary upright vacuum cleaners. In addition canister vacuums have a higher rate of durability and dependability. If you need an all around vacuum cleaner then you should invest into a quality canister vacuum.

Best Carpet Steam Cleaners For Home Use

Filed under: Vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 8:25 am

Steam carpet cleaners are one of the best ways to clean a carpet for best results. if you have decided to but a new steam carpet cleaner, there are many factors that needs to be considered be fore you pick up the right one.

Here are some of the features, which you must look for in carpet cleaners.

1) Since it is “carpet cleaner” it must have wheels at the bottom, so that you can easily move them around for cleaning all corners are areas with ease. Also check the length of the power chord so that you can move around easily.

2) You must check the weight of the steam carpet cleaner, before and after the water is filled in. It is quite obvious that you will be using the carpet cleaner with water filled in it for producing steam. You must be able to move it easily even after water filled in.

3) Another advantage of checking the weight is, you must be able to lift it to upper floors by hand.

4) Check the nozzle of the cleaner from where the steam is thrown out. Is adjustable with a capacity to regulate the throw of the steam. This feature is important because not al surfaces will require equal amount of heat. Also check the temperature of the steam that gets produced. For home use it must be 240 to 260 degrees.

5) Does the carpet comes as a package with cleaning accessories such as cleaning brushes, towels, etc. Also all other standards features such as servicing of the steam carpet cleaner of anything goes wrong, warranty, etc, must be checked. One of the most important points to consider while servicing is that, do the company have a service center in your local city or do they send your carpet cleaner to somewhere else for servicing. It should not happen that 15 days have gone in servicing your steam carpet cleaner because of the time taken in transportation from one city to another.

This was a small list of features to choose from. I hope it will help you as a starting guide in picking up the best carpet steam cleaners for home use.

Troubleshooting an In-Ground Pool Cleaner

Filed under: Vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 10:10 pm

My cleaner doesn’t move

Cleaners depend on several factors to make them operate. There must be enough water flow past the turbine. Use a vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1″ vacuum per section of hose.

Second, the four small “shoes” must be able to grip the pool surface. Make sure that the “shoes” are not worn out and that the surface of the pool is not slippery because of a buildup of algae. Note: some algae is clear, be sure to feel the underwater pool surface.

Third, the shoes and “pods” must be working correctly. Any wear in the “drive train” can cause problems. To check for wear, hold the left and right “pods” in your hands and firmly, try to rock the pods. All force on the pods should be transferred to the turbine and no “play” should be evident.

As a test, hold the cleaner by the hose. Keep the cleaner below water with the pump running. Hold the cleaner off the bottom of the pool and observe, the cleaner should: rotate right - not rotate - rotate left - not rotate - rotate right - etc. All the time, the “pods” should be kicking. If you can reach under the cleaner and stop the pods with your hand, there is either excessive wear on the internal parts or inadequate suction. Remember to check the vacuum reading before calling for assistance.

The hoses are twisting

Cleaner hoses cannot be coiled up for storage. If you have coiled them, take the sections apart, lay them straight, and leave them outside for an entire day and night. Once the curls are removed, the hose should be usable.

Cleaner won’t climb the wall of my vinyl liner pool

Depending on the angle of the pool floor to the pool walls, the cleaner may not be able to “climb” the “slope.” Picture the cleaner on the pool bottom at the intersection of where the pool wall meets the bottom at a sharp angle, (like the walls in your house.) The cleaner will not be able to make the transition, don’t worry, it’s not supposed to. After all, the dirt is on the bottom.

The cleaner sticks at the steps

The hose might be too short.

Check to see that the hose extends two full sections past the furthest point in the pool.

Check to see that the return line(s) are not affecting the cleaner’s movement.

Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1 inch of vacuum per section of hose.

Check the shoes, wings and flaps for wear.

Check the rear flap adjuster, and move it to the I position.

If the cleaner is not doing the “test” movements, call Blue Haven Pools & Spas Supplies Direct.

My cleaner floats above the pool floor

The cleaner is heavier than water, and should not float.

Make sure that all the air was removed from the cleaner head and hoses during installation.

Make sure that the hose extends two full sections past the farthest point in the pool.

Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1 inch vacuum per section of house.

Check to see that the return line(s) are not affecting the cleaner or the cleaner hose.

Check for signs of air returning to the pool through the return line(s). Look for air bubbles attached to the cleaner hose and head. If present, pull sharply on the cleaner hose to release bubbles. Then, correct the source of the air leak to prevent further “floating.”

My cleaner moves slowly

Check the shoes, wings and flaps for wear.

Check for obstructions in the cleaner.

Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. It should be 1 inch vacuum per section of hose. If the cleaner still moves slowly, call Blue Haven Pools & Spas Supplies Direct.

The pods at the front of the cleaner are worn

The cleaner is sticking at the steps or against a wall. See cleaner sticking at the steps section above.

Cleaner climbs to the surface and sucks air

The vacuum is probably too high. Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1 inch vacuum per section of hose.

Check the rear flap adjuster, and move it to the I position.

Check the shoes, wings, and flaps for wear.

As a test, hold the cleaner by the hose. Keep the cleaner below water with the pump running. Hold the cleaner off the bottom of the pool and observe, the cleaner should: rotate right - not rotate - rotate left - not rotate - rotate right - etc. If the cleaner is not turning, call Blue Haven Pools & Spas Supplies Direct.

The bottom of my cleaner is worn

The shoes are worn, and the vacuum in the cleaner hose is probably too high. Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1″ of vacuum per section of hose. Replace worn shoes.

The top of my cleaner won’t turn

You will not be able to turn the cleaner top when the cleaner is full of water. Drain the water from the cleaner head, and try to rotate the top both left and right - there might be some debris in the gears. If the top does not turn, call Blue Haven Pools & Spas Supplies Direct.

Air comes into my pool when the cleaner is installed, and stops after the cleaner is removed

There is a leak on the suction side of your filter system that only shows up when you stress the system. i.e. - install your manual vacuum cleaner or an automatic vacuum cleaner. Check for obvious leaks at the pump housing, check the lid and o-ring. If the air persists, contact Blue Haven Pools & Spas Supplies Direct.

The flappers/wings have fallen off

There is excess wear on the bottom of the cleaner, and the wing hooks have probably broken off the pods. The shoes are worn, and the vacuum in the cleaner hose is probably too high. Use the vacuum gauge to measure the vacuum in the cleaner hose. You should have 1″ of vacuum per section of hose. Replace worn components.

Miele Capricorn S5980 Luna Silver Canister

Anything with the Miele trademark logo is known to be of quality and this is no different when it comes to their brand of vacuum cleaners. Preventing and Cleaning Your Home For Mold - A Mold Free Environment

Filed under: Upright vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 3:15 pm

It is important to keep your Indoor Environment clean and free of Mold. Mold can cause allergies and allergic reactions in the home. It can be very annoying to go home and start reacting to something in your home after a hard day at the office. These allergens can sometimes make you sneeze or feel tired. Everyone has different symptoms. I have some clients who have constant Chronic Fatigue if they are exposed to mold on a daily basis. Asthma attacks can also be initiated by allergens such as mold in your home. Some attacks can put you in the hospital if not controlled properly.

Mold is a perfect example of an allergen that can be in your home. Most of my clients are in the South Florida Area and have to deal with high humidity on a constant basis. High humidity encourages mold to grow. A lot of the foreclose homes that we are inspecting now have contaminated Air Conditioning Systems. This is because the Banks or Realtors are not leaving the A/C on or are setting the temperature too high to properly remove the humidity.

If the outdoor environment has high humidity, the humidity will migrate toward the Indoor Environment gradually. The interior of the homes are a closed up box with no A/C, thus the high humidity plus mold spores (they are everywhere) means mold will start to grow on the interior of the house. It first starts in the A/C Systems and then spreads slowly through the house on the organic materials. So if you are considering buying a foreclose, get it tested for mold by a certified mold inspector to prevent this problem from happening to you. Warning: Do not hire someone just to test, this is a waste of money. You need to hire a professional that can investigate the reasons for the mold, then tell you what needs to be done and write a protocol on what needs to be fixed.

Mold is a living organism and loves humid and damp environments. It is important to make sure that your homes’ A/C System has enough ventilation, especially in those areas that get moisture. Remember, no moisture, no mold. Get a hygrometer that measures the humidity in your home. Check it once a week especially during the summer months of high humidity. If you notice a change, call an A/C repairman immediately. If your home has high humidity after this, then there is a serious construction defect in your home.

Have your home evaluated by a professional with lots of experience in this type of problem or you will have a serious mold problem long term. I constantly see this happen because of incompetence in the construction field. Don’t get me wrong, I know a lot of very competent contractors who do excellent work. There is an old saying in this field: Don’t allow workmen in your home on Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Enough said about this.

Mold Allergy, especially in people with weakened immune systems, can be a serious problem. It can cause the usual symptoms associated with allergies. I have a lot of clients who react such as sneezing, headaches, and nasal congestion. It can also trigger asthma attacks and neurological symptoms. Visually inspecting your home on a weekly basis is important to prevent these problems. You say what!

Yes, on a weekly basis because that’s all the time mold needs to get a foothold into your home due to a water leak or dew pointing. When you find it, stop the moisture source first. If it is a small area, clean it up. Go to www.safe-homes.com for a free EPA Guide to Mold Remediation on how to clean it up yourself. If it is larger than 10 square feet, consider hiring a professional mold remediation company.

Finally, be wary of all the claims of mold cleaning products, check the labels and read the MSDS (Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet) Reports on the products. I have several clients that are allergic to some of these products but not to all. It is an individual thing and must be done before using these products to clean. Remember, always proceed with caution in this area. If you are Chemically Sensitive or have Asthma, consult with your Doctor before attempting any form of mold cleanup.

Fabric Care

Filed under: Upright vacuum cleaner — nancyterry @ 5:03 am

The use of fabric is so variable that it’s difficult to give hard fast advice on how it might behave in different situations. For example velvet can change its finished length by the fibers relaxing in certain atmosphere. The longer and heavier the fabric is the greater the finished length may alter over a period of a few weeks. Viscose and rayon may shrink or relax in different humidity. Cotton velvets may drop considerably as may looser weave fabrics. For this reason curtains should be made with a good-sized hem, loosely sewn as with side seams. Any linings should also be slip stitched. This will allow for any possible movement when the curtains are hung. Alternatively, lengths can be cut and hung over a banister where the atmospheric conditions are the same as to where the curtains are going to be hung.

Fading

All fabrics will eventually fade but dark dye silks will fade particularly if they are in direct sunlight. Avoid dark colors at very sunny windows where possible and always use a good solprufe lining to protect fabrics. Keep furniture, where upholstery fabrics have been used, out of the sun.

Shrinkage

All fabrics are susceptible to shrinkage particularly natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. You should allow up to 6% shrinkage when making curtains and loose covers. Fabrics may also shrink with dry cleaning. When making loose covers it is important to allow for shrinkage. Tight fitting covers look the best but be aware that, after washing, the loose covers will shrink. The initial fit should allow for up to 6% shrinkage.

Please note that any accessories or trimmings used on cushions etc may shrink at a different rate. Also it is important to use the correct cotton for sewing as this can shrink at a different rate and spoil the look of curtains or cushions etc.

Cleaning

Most fabric companies suggest dry cleaning and it is important to follow the recommendations for care otherwise problems cannot be put right at a later date. Most loose covers are better dry cleaned as there is less room for shrinkage and they come back pressed and generally look better. However, some people prefer washing cushions etc particularly where there are young families. This is possible with natural fabrics but its best to test a sample piece first to check how the fabric might react.

Pattern Repeats

If there is a pattern repeat to the fabric you choose always make sure before you cut into it that the patterns are aligned for curtain use. The majority of pattern repeats adhere to the specifications given in the pattern book but occasionally a variance might occur, particularly with woven fabrics. No company will accept responsibility for this once the fabrics have been cut into so it is very important to check first that you are happy with how the widths of fabric join up.

Fabric suitability

Check with your supplier first that the fabric you have chosen is the correct fabric for the job you require it to do. Fabrics used for covering furniture are usually given a rub test and then categorised in to Careful Domestic, General Domestic, Severe Domestic or general contract or Severe Contract. A family with children climbing on and off the sofa is going to require a general domestic fabric whereas a sofa used occasionally may be ok with careful domestic.
